Devil at my heels: a heroic Olympian's astonishing story of survival as a Japanese POW in World War II

    Zamperini, Louis.

A juvenile delinquent, a world-class NCAA miler, a 1936 Olympian, a World War II bombardier: Louis Zamperini had a life fuller than most when it changed in an instant. On May 27, 1943, his B-24 crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Louis and two other survivors drifted two thousand miles for forty-seven days. On the forty-seventh day, they were captured by the Japanese. Thus began more than two years of torture and humiliation as prisoners of war. Meanwhile, the Army Air Corps declared Zamperini dead and President Roosevelt sent official condolences to his family, who never gave up hope that he was alive. Somehow Zamperini survived and he returned home a hero.

The finest hours: the true story of the U.S. Coast Guard's most daring sea rescue

    Tougias, Mike 1955-

In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor-easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril. In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with "dirty steel" and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic's mercy.

    A mighty tempest

    Hamilton, Michelle

A great and inspiring story of courage and faith. For seventy-two terrifying hours hours, Michelle Hamiltoin clung to her small canoe in the middle of the South China Sea. Circled by hungry sharks and with no food, or water, she endured the relentless sun and violent storms at night, using all her strength paddling against the tides, that carried her farther and farther from land. Utterly helpless, she felt the hovering presence of death. In her darkest hour she cried out to God. It was then she began to realize, she was not alone there on the high seas. Several times, at the height of her desperation, she heard a voice- an audible voice, telling her exactly what to do to stay alive.
